Arun Nathani, CEO and MD, Cybage was recently awarded the Rashtriya Udyog Ratna award by the Council for Economic Growth & Research, New Delhi, on the occasion of the 10th National Seminar on “National Economic Growth Through Individual Contribution." The Rashtriya Udyog Ratna award is given in recognition for outstanding achievement and contribution to economic growth through business excellence.
November 30th, 2009 – NASSCOM
Arun, in his role as CEO and Managing Director of Cybage, expounds the vision of Cybage and sets the direction and roadmap for achieving the organizational objectives. All organizational charters converge to Arun as he leads from the front for Cybage to grow as a figurehead in the global software services industry. He mentors each dimension of Cybage’s ecosystem in delivering tangible returns to our global customers from their relationship with Cybage.
Arun has leveraged his industry thought leadership to conceptualize and conceive Cybage’s ExcelShore™ Model of Operational Excellence. Arun’s fundamental thought process and philosophy behind ExcelShore is to keep the ‘house in order’ and to concentrate on internal efficiencies so that every dollar spent by the clients returns to them amplified.
Arun is a strong advocate of cultivating/nurturing organic growth. Even if inorganic growth comes in the way of strategic progression, it has to eventually gel with the overall organic dimensions of corporate growth and prosperity.
Q: What is the innovative concept and how does it work?
A: ExcelShore™ Model of Operational Excellence is Cybage’s innovative concept in the global software services industry. ExcelShore™ aims at maximizing the clients’ Return on Investment (ROI) by optimizing at every step across the life cycle of software engagement. Objective being that every dollar that clients invest in Cybage returns to them amplified with a least possible efficiency loss. ExcelShore™ also empowers objective decision making and project risk mitigation across the life cycle of the engagement through a real-time and sophisticated dashboard featuring the important project Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
The way ExcelShore™ Model works is hard real-time, comprehensive and integrated. Projects under the relationship are executed leveraging Cybage’s ExcelShore™ model. As soon as the relationship begins, ExcelShore™ puts the customer objectives right on top. The sophisticated algorithmic software powered system gets into action and lays out various dynamics of the project execution for the relationship. Each module within the system is designed to provide key insights into each stage through which the offshore software engagement passes through, thereby enabling optimization and objective decision making. It provides a comprehensive and sophisticated dashboard which provides project KPIs, as the data gets generated during the inception of the project (like team composition, skill sets, milestones etc.) and during the execution of project (like project attrition, performance appraisal, scaling up, new recruitment, project profitability, risk forecasting etc.). Thus, ExcelShore™ empowers stakeholders across the hierarchy to keep a tab over the projects in their respective roles and responsibilities, leading to the relationship meeting with its inherent objectives and thereby growing consistently over a period of time.
Q: When and how did you come up with the idea? When did you start working on it?
A: Continuous improvement and maximizing customer’s ROI through optimization has always been Cybage’s core business philosophy right from its inception 14 years back. As the software services business started getting cluttered and increasingly being viewed as a commodity business, Cybage strongly believed that its expertise in maximizing the ROI through continuous optimization has an incomparable merit. That was the point in early 2005 that Cybage started crystallizing the tenets for developing an immaculate ExcelShore™ system that puts its operational excellence at work.
Q3. What makes this particular concept different? Are there competitors? If yes, how do you stand out?
A: We at Cybage believe that while there can be similar systems in the market that facilitate the business decision making, ExcelShore™ system is quite different from them because it imbibes continuous optimization across the project life cycle which directly hits clients business bottom line thereby maximizing ROI. The algorithms, business logic and the inbuilt artificial intelligence enabling optimization are proprietary to Cybage and have been uniquely mastered in-house.
Q: Who are the consumers that you are targeting with the innovation? How is this going to affect them?
A: So far, Cybage’s target market by and large has been the software product companies – Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) as they are popularly known as. Having seen an excellent response from the market, Cybage now is poised to offer services to diverse industry verticals – the end users of IT systems. Independent of the market segments being targets, the impact that Cybage makes by maximizing the returns on each dollar spent is quite strong and longer lasting. For instance, product companies can reduce their costs dramatically that directly increases their profit margin and again it’s a question of value of money.
Q: What is the potential of growth of the innovation?
A: Cybage has grown exponentially at CAGR of over 50% since its inception in 1995 and most of its growth is attributable to ExcelShore™. Though October-December 2008 had been historically low earning quarter, things have started picking up. We closed the FY 08-09 at Rs 275 crore as against Rs 208 crore in FY 07-08. Cybage grew at over 30 percent in FY 08-09 despite recessionary times, once again surpassing the industries growth standard of 16-17%.
Q: Future plans.
A: Cybage has a well planned road map for further development of ExcelShore™ system. The future developments would be aimed at deep integration of ExcelShore™ system with all the business processes and decisions thereby covering the entire value-chain under an offshore software services business. Since ExcelShore™ imbibes operational excellence into blood stream of the business, Cybage has ambitious plans to offer end-to-end consulting services to the organizations aiming operational excellence, especially under the high-tech industry. The consulting services will leverage implementation of ExcelShore™ system and related re-orchestration of business processes marching towards the operational excellence.

September 15, 2009 – Dataquest
Cybage has been ranked at no. 25 in the Dataquest – IDC IT Best Employers annual national survey 2009. Cybage managed to hold on to its ranking this year with its HR score far ahead of many companies even in the top 20 list. The company ramped up its processes and efficiencies by deploying ExcelShore TM, an operational excellence system. Cybage has also been investing heavily on the infrastructure front.
About the Dataquest-IDC Best Employers survey
Participating IT companies across India entered a two-part process to determine the DQ-IDC Best Employers. The first part consisted of selecting companies based on five key parameters such as Employee Size, Average Tenure (years), Total Average Training, Retention Rate, and Average Salary Hike (%) indexed and weighted on a total score of 100. The second part consisted of a confidential Employee Satisfaction survey. The combined scores from both the process determined the top companies and final ranking.

August 2009 – The Smart Techie
A global IT major stands committed to bring best-of-breed and path breaking technology solutions to their global customers, faster and cost competitive than their competitors. As a part of that, they initiated their offshore software development program. This was certainly a big step for them as it meant a fundamental shift in the way they developed their products and solutions – a grass root business transformation because it would directly impact their revenue spinners and life lines. Through a careful and rigorous evaluation process the client zeroed down on Cybage as their strategic offshore software development partner.
Global Offshore Software services company, Cybage, demonstrated a unique approach to relationship. Cybage’s ExcelShore™ model of Operational Excellence effectively controls the entire dynamics of offshore software product development right from transition to the delivery. It aims at enabling the clients achieve their fundamental business objectives behind going offshore. Today, the alliance is a thriving and a matured Offshore Development Center (ODC) relationship, which has resulted in many successful projects and continues to bloom.
Since its inception in 1995, Cybage’s major strength lies in Outsourced Product Development (OPD) segment. However, what is unique about Cybage is that its strengths can rightly be manifested in their value delivery through encapsulation of operational excellence. “Our ExcelShore™ Model of Operational Excellence is Cybage’s innovative concept in the global software services industry. ExcelShore aims at maximizing the clients’ Return on Investment (ROI) by optimizing at every step across the life cycle of software engagement. Objective being that every dollar that clients invest in Cybage returns to them amplified with a least possible efficiency loss, says Arun Nathani, CEO & MD Cybage.
Continuous improvement and maximizing customer’s ROI through optimization has always been Cybage’s core business philosophy right from its inception. As the software services business started getting cluttered and increasingly being viewed as a commodity business, Cybage strongly believed that its expertise in maximizing the ROI through continuous optimization has an incomparable merit.

The algorithms, business logic and the inbuilt artificial intelligence enabling optimization are proprietary to Cybage and have been uniquely mastered in-house.
“Cybage stands distinctly apart from other software services companies in India since optimization is in our blood stream. There is a difference between “low cost” and “optimization” and we are talking about “value for money” here – what do you get at what price,” adds Nathani.
Cybage is in the process of moving up the value chain through a gradual and careful expansion of business practices driven services portfolio. So far, Cybage’s target market by and large has been the software product companies – Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) as they are popularly known as. Having seen an excellent response from the market, Cybage now is poised to offer services to diverse industry verticals – the end users of IT systems.
“Cybage has worked with over 150 clients globally. Today, we are concurrently serving over 100 clients across four continents. North America is still the largest market contributing 80 percent of the total business. Other markets include Europe, Australia, New Zealand and India. UK & Netherlands are major focus areas in Europe. Our vast client portfolio spans across verticals like Travel & Hospitality, Interactive Advertising, Security, Retail, BFSI and telecom,” explains Nathani. Cybage’s key clients include the likes of Microsoft, Symantec, Electronic Arts, SAP, DoubleClick, Lexis Nexis and HSBC, to name a few. The company is featured in the 2009 Global Services 100 list as one of the top 100 Innovative Service Providers. Cybage was ranked no. 4 in the 2008 Global Outsourcing 100, rising star category by IAOP.
“Cybage grew by over 30% in FY 08/09 despite recessionary times, once again surpassing the industries growth standard of 16-17%,”says Nathani. With centers in Pune, Hyderabad, Gandhinagar and Redmond (WA) USA, Cybage is further expanding in Pune with a 5000-seater campus.
Nathani has his own views on recession hitting the industry. “It's a good time to see how IT companies have been managing the cost and efficiency part, which is what they, ironically sell to their customers. Doctors make the worst patients. This applies so well for IT companies,” he observes.

Cost cutting is a word hanging everywhere, be it inside a vendor or in a CIO's wallet. Here are some fresh views.
PUNE, INDIA: So yes, slowdown has snowballed into cost cuts all around. But it's important to interpret the cuts smartly, with an eye into the future.
Doctors make the worst patients as very interestingly Arun Nathani, CMD, Cybage, puts in as he talks on cost efficiency. "Recession is both a white and black force. It's a good time to see how IT companies have been managing the cost and efficiency part, which is what they, ironically sell to their customers. Doctors make the worst patients. This applies so well for IT companies," he observes.
"There are so many companies that have spent so much time positioning themselves well outside, that they forgot the real story inside. At Cybage, we have always tried to do balance both the sides. It's not just about how the world looks at you that matters.
"It's more important to make sure that one's internal focus justifies the claims we make outside, be it to our clients, our rivals or to media. Internal focus and maintaining efficiency is not as glamorous as the outside stuff, especially when everything is going well. It's a tedious thing, but all the same, it is very very important, be it a good time or a bad time," adds Nathani.
Nathani opines that the biggest problem with IT companies is the lack of attention on the internal focus. "If you are here to optimize stuff for the world, for the clients, first do it for yourself. IT is supposed to increase productivity, but how much of that is applied inwards? There's more to being a good IT player than catching the customer's mindshare and playing the branding game."
At Cybage, as he cites, productivity is not something that has received a sudden focus now. "It's been a routine thing for us always."

Karnwadi village, located about 7 kms from Bhor, was a place of total neglect where even the most basic facilities of sanitation or water supply were not available. For the villagers, life was nothing but an existence in penury. But that was before a group of IT professionals from Cybage arrived at the village and set about to usher in a wonderful transformation. Such has been the face-lift here that Karnwadi was awarded the Nirmal Gram Puraskar 2008 for being one of the cleanest villages in Maharashtra.
Recession may have eaten into material comforts, especially in the corporate scenario, but it certainly hasn’t dimmed the spirit of social service among the whiz kids of Cybage who continue to find time to perform their roles of Good Samaritans. Taking time out of their busy schedules and hectic professional assignments, a group of software technologists from Cybage have proved that no obstacles can stand their ground in front of a strong commitment. They are a part of CybageAsha, a corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity of Cybage who work for the under-privileged and needy sections of society to enhance their quality of life. They had adopted a tiny village called Karnwadi around two years ago in the heartland of Maharashta, located around 7 kms from Bhor. Karnwadi has a population of 300 residents. “The village was taken under our wings so that we could develop for its people new sources of income and improve their standard of living with the construction of toilets, tree plantations, a proper drainage system, education, zero budget organic farming and water harvesting. Our aim also was to make them conscious about their responsibilities in society,” states a senior project manager at Cybage and a senior committee member of CybageAsha. The villagers started participating in the programmes and the transformation, when it happened over a period of time, was such that Karnwadi was honoured with the Nirmal Gram Puraskar for overall cleanliness and the Tantamukt Gaon Purskar in 2008.
CybageAsha followed the chronology of human needs for the improvement of the village. Resuming the water supply to Karnwadi village, arranging free medical check-ups for women and children, installing smokeless chulhas (cooking areas) in every house to ensure that the villagers would no longer suffer from respiratory ailments, education, tree plantation drives, vermiculture (the preparation of organic fertilisers with home waste and garbage) and educating the villagers on the benefits of an an ideal village were some of the basic activities undertaken.
For the villagers, the involvement of CybageAsha has worked like a miracle. “We had never ever dreamt that Karnwadi would one day win a national award. What CybageAsha has done is to not only provide us with the basic facilities to make our lives more comfortable but has given us an identity and shown us the path to development and progress. Those who were unemployed or did not have any land are now engaged in income generating activities such as making candles, developing vermiculture pits etc,” says the village sarpanch (head).

Arun Nathani, CEO & MD Cybage says, “There is not much scope for recruitment in the present scenario. Companies are not growing right now; in fact, many are on the verge of shrinking. So getting a job when companies are holding their recruitment plans proves to be a real challenge for newcomers. The movement of the recruitment cycle has slowed down tremendously.
I would tell freshers to do their best in academics and take studies seriously. They must keep doing their work and not think about the result, as that is not in anyone’s hand. This is a short-term problem. In the long run, companies will prefer freshers who have the zeal to prove their excellence and are not there only for the money. The industry was on a boom a few months ago, so all companies have employees who are not productive, but hold senior positions. Companies will prefer replacing them with freshers who want to prove themselves.
Students should not opt for higher studies just for the sake of it, but they can do a specialization that would fetch them a better place in the industry. If one is unable to find a job, one must focus on specialized education that will help one get a better position. Landing up in the right industry is what matters today. Students must not worry about packages right now and should take up what they get. The scenario will not get better very soon.
