Manufacturing Execution System
Manufacturing execution systems (MES) are implemented for managing and monitoring work-in-process on factory shop floors. Feeds from work orders, job schedules, industrial automation equipments, CAD/CAM systems, and shop floor events give MES the ability to keep track of all the manufacturing activities in real time and generate manufacturing intelligence.
Manufacturing intelligence feeds from MES play a very important role in the supply chain management of a manufacturing company. Traditional MES systems operate as self-contained systems; however, in view of collaborative manufacturing strategies, integration of MES with ERP and SCM systems has become a necessity. Most of the ERP vendors are making MES an integral part of their ERP systems or are developing connectors to seamlessly integrate MES with ERP, while MES vendors are making sure that their systems can be plugged into enterprise applications.
